Our #wcw this week is Miriam Makeba also known as ‘Mama Africa’ and the ‘Empress of African Song’.

She was a singer, composer, actor, UN goodwill ambassador, and civil rights activist from South Africa. She was a vocal opponent of apartheid and white minority rule in South Africa, and was associated with musical genres such as Afropop, jazz, and world music.

Makeba was one of the first African singer to gain international recognition in the 1960s through her advocacy with her songs.

She was rendered stateless by her country, because of her political activism but was soon issued passports by nine other countries and granted honorary citizenship in ten.

She died doing what she loved. She suffered a heart attack during a concert in Italy on the 9th of November 2008 after singing her hit song “Pata Pata” and doctors were unable to revive her.

Her song “Malaika” is a favourite in our Boogie Babies classes.
